For the walnut Striezel first prepare the Dampfl. For the dampfl, crumble the yeast into the lukewarm milk, mix in the sugar and leave to rise in a warm place for about 1/2 hour.

For the dough, mix the flour, grated walnuts, salt, powdered sugar, egg, melted butter and lukewarm milk and fold in the dampfl and knead.

Let the dough rise for at least 1 hour until it doubles in size. Knead again briefly, divide into 3 parts and form individual rolls.

Place them next to each other and press them together at one end. Now make a braid and press the other end well together. Preheat the oven to 180 °C.

Brush the Striezel with a beaten egg and bake for about 25 minutes.
