For the poppy seed cake with cherries, prepare a sponge mixture of 175 ml milk, butter, eggs, flour, 170 g sugar, vanilla sugar and baking powder.
Mix one third of the batter with the poppy seeds, rum, 30 g sugar and the remaining milk.
Stir the cherries into the basic dough. And pour the dough into a greased gugelhupfform. Pour the poppy seed dough on top of the cherry dough and stir briefly with a fork.
Bake the Gugelhupf in a preheated oven at 180°C for 75 minutes.
Sprinkle the poppy seed cake with cherries with powdered sugar before serving.
