For the lentil rice stew, soak the lentils overnight and boil them in salted water until soft, strain (save 500 ml of the cooking water) and drain well.

Wash the rice and add it to the lentil broth along with the oil. Bring to a boil, cover and cook on low heat until all the liquid has boiled away, add the lentils.

Cut the onions into noodles, roast them in the oil until brown and sprinkle them over the rice. Serve immediately with sour milk or yogurt.
